Life in the lab

We are a multidisciplinary lab and apply synthetic biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics to advance both fundamental and applied plant science. We don’t expect everyone who joins the lab to be skilled across all areas. We offer a supportive environment for researchers with opportunities to develop new scientific skills and techniques and refine their transferrable skills. PhD students will gain experience in designing and carrying out scientific experiments and will be trained in critical thinking and how to present and discuss their research. Postdocs will be encouraged to develop their career goals and will be mentored to develop their leadership skills. You can learn more about our lab culture and how we aim to train and support lab members in our lab charter.

In February 2024, our lab began the process of relocating to the University of Cambridge. All new lab members will join at this location, but part of our group remains in Norwich. In Cambridge, we are located in the Department of Plant Sciences.  In Norwich, we are located in The Earlham Institute on the Norwich Research Park (NRP). In both locations, our lab is well-equipped for plant molecular and synthetic biology, and we have access to numerous platform facilities to help our work.

Funded positions (technician, post-graduate, postdoctoral, etc.) are advertised, and applications must be submitted via the official links provided in the advert. However, if you are interested in joining the lab, please email Nicola briefly stating your career so far, your research interests (a few sentences are fine), and why you are interested in a project in our lab. Please also attach a short (2-page max) CV. If you are eligible to apply for your own funding (e.g. EMBO, Marie Curie, L’Oréal-UNESCO, BBSRC/EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellowship), please get in touch with Nicola well in advance of any deadline to discuss whether we can support your application.
